「このノートに名前を書かれた人間は、40秒後に死ぬ。」
退屈な日々に飽きた死神リュークは、一冊のノートを人間界へ落とした。拾ったのは、腐敗した世の中に不満を抱く天才高校生・夜神月。ノートの力が本物だと知った彼は、犯罪者を次々と裁き、犯罪のない「新世界」をつくろうとする。人々はいつしか、その見えない救世主を「キラ」と呼ぶようになった。
相次ぐ心臓麻痺の死に、警察は世界的名探偵「L」へ捜査を依頼する。わずかな手がかりからキラの居場所と素性を絞り込んでいくL。やがて二人は同じ大学で顔を合わせ、Lは自ら名乗り出て、月をキラ捜査に招き入れる——互いの正体を探り合う、静かな頭脳戦の始まりだった。
そこへ現れたのは、もう一冊のデスノートを持つ「第二のキラ」、アイドルの弥海砂。寿命の半分と引き換えに「死神の目」を手にした彼女は、月のもとへたどり着く。月はミサの力でLの名を暴こうとするが、ミサは拘束されてしまう。彼女に憑く死神レムは、ある決断を迫られていた。
勝つのはLか、月か。新世界の神は現れるのか。そして、正義はどこにあるのか。

Bored with the unchanging days of the shinigami realm, the god of death Ryuk drops a single notebook into the human world. It is picked up by Light Yagami, a brilliant high school student disgusted by a society rotting through the loopholes in its laws. Learning that the notebook’s power is real, he begins passing judgment on criminals one after another, determined to build a “new world” without crime. Before long, people begin calling their unseen savior “Kira.”
Faced with a wave of sudden heart attacks, the police turn to the world-famous detective known only as “L.” From the slimmest of clues, L narrows down Kira’s whereabouts and identity. When the two finally meet at the same university, L steps forward and invites Light to join the Kira investigation — the start of a silent battle of wits, each trying to expose the other.
Then comes the “Second Kira”: Misa Amane, a pop idol holding another Death Note. Having traded half of her remaining life for the “Shinigami Eyes,” she finds her way to Light. Light plans to use Misa’s power to uncover L’s true name, but Misa is captured. Rem, the shinigami who haunts her, is forced to make a fateful decision.
Who will win — L or Light? Will the god of the new world appear? And where, in the end, does justice lie?
